Niels Eje is a Danish composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on August 17, 1956, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Eje grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Eje started playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the violin, guitar, and percussion instruments. Eje's passion for music led him to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received a degree in composition and conducting. He also studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts, USA. Eje's career as a composer began in the early 1980s when he started writing music for films, television, and theater productions. He also composed music for ballets, operas, and symphonies. His music is known for its unique blend of classical, jazz, and world music influences. One of Eje's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with renowned soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, and Lang Lang. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Eje is also a skilled performer. He has performed as a soloist on the violin, guitar, and percussion instruments in concerts around the world. He is particularly known for his performances on the pan flute, an instrument he learned to play during his travels in South America. He has also received the Danish Music Critics' Prize, the Wilhelm Hansen Composer Prize, and the Nordic Council Music Prize. One of Eje's most notable works is his "Concerto for Pan Flute and Orchestra," which he composed in 1990.
