The All-Union Radio and Television Great Symphonic Orchestra was a classical music ensemble that was founded in the Soviet Union in 1936. The orchestra was created as a way to showcase the talents of the country's best musicians and to promote classical music to a wider audience. The ensemble was made up of some of the most talented musicians in the Soviet Union, including many who had won prestigious awards and competitions. The orchestra was led by a number of different conductors over the years, including Nikolai Malko, Evgeny Mravinsky, and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. One of the highlights of the orchestra's early years was its performance at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. The ensemble received critical acclaim for its performances of works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. During World War II, the orchestra played an important role in boosting morale among Soviet troops and civilians. The ensemble performed in hospitals, factories, and other venues throughout the country, bringing classical music to people who might not have had the opportunity to hear it otherwise. In the post-war years, the orchestra continued to perform at home and abroad, earning a reputation as one of the finest classical music ensembles in the world. The ensemble's performances of works by Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich were particularly acclaimed. One of the orchestra's most famous performances took place in 1962, when it played at the opening ceremony of the World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki, Finland. The ensemble received a standing ovation for its performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. Over the years, the All-Union Radio and Television Great Symphonic Orchestra won numerous awards and accolades for its performances. The ensemble was awarded the Order of Lenin, the highest civilian honor in the Soviet Union, in 1976. Despite its many achievements, the orchestra faced challenges in the years leading up to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Funding for the arts was cut, and many of the ensemble's members left to pursue opportunities abroad. The All-Union Radio and Television Great Symphonic Orchestra gave its final performance in 1991, just months before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The ensemble's legacy lives on, however, through its many recordings and the memories of those who had the opportunity to hear it perform.
