He was born on January 13, 1846, in Vyatka, Russia, to a family of musicians. His father was a church choir director, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Arkhangel'sky showed a great interest in music and began studying piano and composition. In 1862, Arkhangel'sky moved to St. Petersburg to study at the Conservatory. He studied under some of the most prominent composers of the time, including Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. During his time at the Conservatory, Arkhangel'sky composed several works, including his first opera, "The Miller's Daughter," which was well-received by audiences. After graduating from the Conservatory in 1867, Arkhangel'sky began working as a music teacher and conductor. He also continued to compose, and his works began to gain recognition. In 1871, he composed his first major work, the opera "The Snow Maiden," which was based on a Russian fairy tale. The opera was a huge success and established Arkhangel'sky as a leading composer in Russia. Over the next few years, Arkhangel'sky continued to compose operas, including "The Tsar's Bride" and "Pan Voyevoda." He also composed several choral works, including "The Great Doxology" and "The Cherubic Hymn." These works showcased Arkhangel'sky's skill in composing for voices and his ability to create powerful and emotional music. In 1885, Arkhangel'sky was appointed as the director of the Imperial Chapel Choir, a position he held for the rest of his life. Under his leadership, the choir became one of the most renowned in Russia, and Arkhangel'sky composed several works specifically for the choir, including "The All-Night Vigil" and "The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom." Arkhangel'sky's music was deeply rooted in Russian culture and tradition. He often used folk melodies and themes in his compositions, and his music was known for its emotional depth and power. His operas, in particular, were praised for their vivid characterizations and dramatic intensity. Despite his success, Arkhangel'sky faced several challenges throughout his career. He struggled with alcoholism, which affected his health and his ability to work. He also faced criticism from some quarters for his use of folk melodies and his adherence to traditional forms and structures. Despite these challenges, Arkhangel'sky continued to compose throughout his life. His later works, including the opera "The Sealed Angel" and the choral work "The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom," were praised for their beauty and emotional power. Arkhangel'sky died on March 29, 1924, in St. Petersburg. His legacy as one of Russia's greatest composers lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and celebrated around the world.More....
