Born on June 23, 1942, in Buffalo, New York, DiMartino grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, DiMartino showed a keen interest in music and began playing the trumpet at the age of nine. DiMartino's early musical education was under the guidance of his father, who taught him the basics of trumpet playing. He later went on to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1964. He then pursued a Master of Music degree at the University of Kentucky, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned trumpet player William Adam. After completing his studies, DiMartino began his professional career as a trumpet player, performing with various orchestras and ensembles across the United States. He also served as the principal trumpet player for the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C., from 1967 to 1970. In 1970, DiMartino joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky as a trumpet professor. He remained at the university for 27 years, during which time he established himself as a highly respected educator and mentor to countless young musicians. He also continued to perform as a soloist and with various ensembles, including the Lexington Brass Band, which he founded in 1987. Throughout his career, DiMartino has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world, including the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with numerous renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and John Williams. In addition to his work as a performer and educator, DiMartino is also an accomplished composer and arranger. He has written numerous works for trumpet and other instruments, as well as arrangements of classical and popular music for various ensembles. DiMartino's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2003, he was inducted into the International Trumpet Guild Hall of Fame, and in 2011, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Trumpet Competition. He has also been awarded the Kentucky Governor's Artist Award and the University of Kentucky's Distinguished Professorship.
