She was the daughter of a minister and grew up in a religious household. Luker's love for music began at a young age, and she started singing in church choirs and school productions. She made her Broadway debut in 1988 in the musical "The Phantom of the Opera," where she played the role of Christine Daaé. Her performance in the show was highly praised, and she received a Theatre World Award for her outstanding debut. Luker went on to star in several other Broadway productions, including "The Secret Garden," "Show Boat," "The Sound of Music," "Mary Poppins," and "Fun Home." She was known for her beautiful soprano voice and her ability to bring depth and emotion to her performances. One of Luker's most memorable performances was in the 1994 revival of "Show Boat," where she played the role of Magnolia Hawks.
