Margaret Wooten was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Wooten showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Wooten's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking private lessons with renowned violinists and attended the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division. At the age of 16, Wooten was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with renowned violinist Ida Kavafian. During her time at Curtis, Wooten won several awards and competitions, including the Philadelphia Orchestra's Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition and the Astral Artists National Auditions. She also performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. After graduating from Curtis, Wooten continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle and Daniel Barenboim. Wooten's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary. She is particularly known for her interpretations of works by Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. She has also premiered several new works by contemporary composers, including John Adams and Kaija Saariaho. In addition to her performing career, Wooten is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at several music schools and conservatories, including the Juilliard School and the New England Conservatory. She is known for her innovative teaching methods, which combine traditional techniques with modern technology. Wooten has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 2010, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians.
