His father, a lawyer, was also a pianist, and his mother was a singer. Estrada's siblings were also musically inclined, with one brother playing the violin and another playing the piano. Estrada began his musical education at a young age, studying piano with his father and later with a private teacher. He also learned to play the violin and the guitar. In 1950, he enrolled at the University of the Philippines, where he studied composition with National Artist for Music, Lucio San Pedro. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1954. After graduation, Estrada worked as a music teacher and composer. He wrote music for films, television, and theater productions. He also composed classical music, including symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. His works were performed by various orchestras and ensembles in the Philippines and abroad. One of Estrada's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1961. The symphony is in three movements and is characterized by its use of Filipino folk melodies and rhythms. It was premiered by the Manila Symphony Orchestra in 1962 and has since been performed by orchestras in the Philippines, Japan, and the United States. Estrada's other notable works include his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, which he composed in 1963. The concerto is in three movements and features a solo violin accompanied by an orchestra. It was premiered by the Manila Symphony Orchestra with violinist Arturo Molina as the soloist. In 1972, Estrada composed his String Quartet No. 1, which is in four movements. The quartet is characterized by its use of dissonant harmonies and unconventional rhythms. It was premiered by the Philippine String Quartet in 1973. Estrada also composed music for the theater, including the musicals "Ang Bagong Cristo" and "Noli Me Tangere." He also wrote music for the film "Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?" which won the Best Picture award at the 1976 Metro Manila Film Festival. Throughout his career, Estrada received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1972, he was awarded the Republic Cultural Heritage Award for Music by the Philippine government. He was also a recipient of the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Estrada continued to compose music until his death on December 13, 1985, at the age of 52.
