Role:EnsemblePeriod:ContemporaryModernGenre:Avant-GardeChamberThe Mondriaan Quartet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1983 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The quartet is named after the famous Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, who was known for his abstract art and use of primary colors. The founding members of the quartet were Stefan Metz (violin), Edwin Blankenstijn (violin), Peter Kamminga (viola), and Eduard van Regteren Altena (cello). The Mondriaan Quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and unique approach to classical music. They were known for their innovative programming, which often included works by contemporary composers alongside more traditional repertoire. The quartet's performances were characterized by their precision, clarity, and emotional depth. Over the years, the Mondriaan Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. They have collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Ronald Brautigam, cellist Pieter Wispelwey, and clarinetist Michael Collins. The quartet has also recorded extensively, with over 20 albums to their name. One of the highlights of the Mondriaan Quartet's career was their performance at the 1994 Edinburgh International Festival. The quartet received critical acclaim for their performance of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131. The Guardian described the performance as "a revelation...the Mondriaan Quartet played with a sense of urgency and intensity that was breathtaking." In addition to their performances, the Mondriaan Quartet has also been recognized for their contributions to classical music. They have received numerous awards and honors, including the Dutch Music Prize in 1991 and the Edison Classical Music Award in 1995. The quartet was also appointed as Artists in Residence at the University of Leiden in 1996. Despite their success, the Mondriaan Quartet has experienced some changes in membership over the years. In 2007, violinist Stefan Metz retired from the quartet and was replaced by Janneke van der Meer. In 2014, cellist Eduard van Regteren Altena retired and was replaced by Honorine Schaeffer. Today, the Mondriaan Quartet continues to perform and record, with a focus on both traditional repertoire and contemporary works. They remain committed to their innovative programming and their dedication to bringing classical music to new audiences. The quartet's current members are Janneke van der Meer (violin), Edwin Blankenstijn (violin), Peter Kamminga (viola), and Honorine Schaeffer (cello).More....
