Role:ComposerBirth:1922Period:ContemporaryGenre:ChamberKeyboardOrchestralVocalGilberto Mendes was a Brazilian composer, pianist, and conductor who was born on August 22, 1922, in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil. He was one of the most important figures in Brazilian contemporary music, and his works have been performed in various countries around the world. Mendes began his musical studies at the age of 12, studying piano with his mother. He later studied composition with Camargo Guarnieri and conducting with Eleazar de Carvalho at the São Paulo Conservatory of Music. In 1947, he received a scholarship from the French government to study composition with Olivier Messiaen and conducting with Hermann Scherchen in Paris. Mendes returned to Brazil in 1950 and became a professor of composition at the São Paulo Conservatory of Music. He also founded the Grupo Música Nova, a collective of composers and performers who were interested in exploring new forms of musical expression. The group was instrumental in the development of Brazilian contemporary music and helped to establish São Paulo as a center for avant-garde music in Latin America. Mendes' early works were influenced by the neoclassical style of Stravinsky and Hindemith, but he later developed a more experimental and avant-garde style. His works often incorporate elements of Brazilian folk music and popular culture, as well as electronic and aleatoric techniques. One of Mendes' most famous works is his opera "The Black Swan," which was premiered in São Paulo in 1960. The opera is based on a Brazilian folktale and incorporates elements of Brazilian popular music, jazz, and serialism. The work was highly acclaimed and helped to establish Mendes as one of the leading composers in Brazil. Mendes' other notable works include "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra," and "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra." He also composed numerous chamber works, including "String Quartet No. 1" and "Sonata for Flute and Piano." In addition to his work as a composer, Mendes was also a respected conductor and pianist. He conducted the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, and he performed as a soloist with various orchestras in Brazil and Europe. Mendes received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Cultural Merit from the Brazilian government and the Medal of the City of Paris. He was also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Music and the São Paulo State Academy of Letters and Arts. Gilberto Mendes passed away on December 1, 2016, at the age of 94. His legacy as a composer and pioneer of Brazilian contemporary music continues to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.More....
