MexicoBirth:February 15, 1926 in Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco, MexicoDeath:February 5, 2022Rubén Fuentes is a renowned Mexican composer, arranger, and violinist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on February 15, 1922, in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, Fuentes grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Rubén Fuentes Gassón, was a violinist and conductor, and his mother, María Luisa Chávez, was a pianist. Fuentes began playing the violin at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Fuentes received his formal music education at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned composers such as Carlos Chávez and Silvestre Revueltas. He also studied violin with the legendary Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti. Fuentes graduated from the conservatory in 1945 and began his career as a professional musician. Fuentes' early career was marked by his work as a violinist in various orchestras, including the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. However, it was his work as a composer and arranger that would bring him the most recognition. Fuentes' compositions and arrangements were heavily influenced by Mexican folk music, and he became known for his ability to blend traditional Mexican music with classical music. One of Fuentes' most significant contributions to Mexican music was his work as the arranger and conductor of the music for the film "Los Tres García" in 1947. The film's soundtrack, which featured Fuentes' arrangements of traditional Mexican songs, became a huge success and helped to popularize Mexican music both in Mexico and abroad. Fuentes continued to work as a composer and arranger throughout the 1950s and 1960s, producing a vast body of work that included orchestral pieces, chamber music, and film scores. One of his most famous compositions is the "Huapango," a piece for orchestra that is based on the traditional Mexican dance of the same name. The "Huapango" has become one of the most popular pieces of classical music in Mexico and is often performed at national celebrations and cultural events. In addition to his work as a composer and arranger, Fuentes was also a respected conductor. He served as the conductor of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra from 1965 to 1970 and later founded the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra in his hometown of Guadalajara. Fuentes' contributions to Mexican music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1992, he was awarded the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in the Fine Arts category, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in Mexico. He was also inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. Rubén Fuentes passed away on September 5, 2019, at the age of 97. His legacy as a composer, arranger, and conductor continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.More....
