Sabicas, born as Agustín Castellón Campos, was a Spanish flamenco guitarist and composer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of flamenco music. He was born on March 16, 1912, in Pamplona, Spain, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Agustín Castellón, was a guitarist, and his mother, Adela Campos, was a singer. Sabicas began playing the guitar at a very young age and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He was heavily influenced by the flamenco tradition of his native Andalusia, and he spent many years studying and perfecting his craft. He also drew inspiration from other musical styles, including classical music and jazz. In the 1930s, Sabicas began performing professionally, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most skilled and innovative flamenco guitarists of his time. He toured extensively throughout Spain and Europe, and he also made several trips to the United States, where he performed in New York City and other major cities. Sabicas was known for his virtuosic playing style, which combined lightning-fast fingerwork with a deep emotional intensity. He was also a prolific composer, and he wrote many pieces that have become staples of the flamenco repertoire. Some of his most famous compositions include "Malagueña," "Farruca," and "Zambra." Throughout his career, Sabicas collaborated with many other musicians and artists, including the legendary flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya. He also recorded numerous albums, both as a solo artist and with other musicians. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Sabicas was also known for his generosity and his dedication to preserving the flamenco tradition. He taught many young guitarists and helped to popularize flamenco music around the world. Sabicas continued to perform and record music well into his later years, and he remained an important figure in the world of flamenco until his death on April 14, 1990. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
