The American Youth Orchestra & Chorus is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 50 years. Founded in 1964, the ensemble has become one of the most renowned youth orchestras in the United States, attracting talented young musicians and singers from across the country. The American Youth Orchestra & Chorus was founded by conductor and music educator, Mehli Mehta. Mehta was born in Bombay, India, and studied music in Vienna, Austria, before moving to the United States in 1958. He was passionate about music education and believed that young musicians should have the opportunity to perform at the highest level. With this vision in mind, he founded the American Youth Orchestra & Chorus in Los Angeles, California. The ensemble's main members are young musicians and singers between the ages of 12 and 22. The orchestra is made up of approximately 100 musicians, while the chorus has around 50 singers. The members are selected through a rigorous audition process, and only the most talented and dedicated musicians and singers are chosen. Over the years, the American Youth Orchestra & Chorus has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States and around the world. The ensemble has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. They have also toured internationally, performing in countries such as Japan, China, and Australia. One of the highlights of the American Youth Orchestra & Chorus's performances was their appearance at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The ensemble performed at the opening ceremony, playing the Olympic Fanfare and Theme by John Williams. The performance was watched by millions of people around the world and helped to cement the ensemble's reputation as one of the best youth orchestras in the world. The American Youth Orchestra & Chorus has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1981, the ensemble was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government. The ensemble has also won numerous competitions and awards, including the Gold Medal at the 1982 International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria.
