He was born in Naples, Italy, into a family of musicians. His father, Ferdinando Carulli, was a renowned guitarist and composer, and his mother, Maria Rosa Morelli, was a singer. Benedetto grew up in a musical environment and showed an early interest in music. Benedetto received his first music lessons from his father, who taught him to play the guitar. He quickly showed a talent for the instrument and began to compose his own music. At the age of 14, he gave his first public performance, playing one of his own compositions. In 1810, Benedetto moved to Paris, where he continued his musical studies. He studied composition with Luigi Cherubini and guitar with Ferdinando Carulli, his father's cousin. In Paris, Benedetto became part of the musical scene and made many contacts with other musicians and composers. Benedetto's early compositions were mainly for the guitar, and he became known as a virtuoso performer on the instrument. He wrote many pieces for solo guitar, as well as duets and chamber music. His music was influenced by the classical style of the time, as well as by the folk music of his native Italy. One of Benedetto's most famous works is his "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra," which he composed in 1820. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the guitar, with fast runs and intricate fingerwork. It was one of the first concertos written for the guitar and helped to establish the instrument as a serious concert instrument. Benedetto also wrote many songs and vocal works, often setting Italian poetry to music. His songs are characterized by their lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies. He was particularly interested in the music of the Italian Renaissance and often incorporated elements of this style into his compositions. In addition to his work as a composer, Benedetto was also a respected music teacher. He taught guitar and composition to many students, including his own son, Gustavo Carulli, who became a successful composer in his own right. Benedetto's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was recognized as one of the leading composers of his time. His works were performed throughout Europe and America, and he was awarded many honors and accolades for his contributions to music. Today, Benedetto Carulli is remembered as one of the most important composers of classical guitar music. His works continue to be performed and recorded by guitarists around the world, and his influence can be heard in the music of many contemporary composers.More....
