As a result, Santelmann was exposed to music at an early age and developed a passion for it. Santelmann began his musical journey by learning to play the piano. He showed exceptional talent and quickly progressed to playing the organ. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned organist, Catharine Crozier. He then went on to earn his Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Robert Glasgow. After completing his studies, Santelmann began his career as a church organist. He served as the organist and choirmaster at several churches in California, including St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley. He also served as the organist for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera. Santelmann's talent and dedication to music soon caught the attention of the music world. He was invited to perform at several prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Festival Hall in London.
