Janis Sporgis was born on May 12, 1985, in Riga, Latvia. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Janis showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Janis received his formal music education at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and professor Arnis Zandmanis. During his studies, Janis won several awards and competitions, including the Latvian National Piano Competition and the International Piano Competition in Tallinn, Estonia. After completing his studies, Janis began performing extensively throughout Europe and Asia, gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist with a unique and expressive style. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Janis's most memorable performances was his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2010. He performed a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff to critical acclaim, with The New York Times praising his "dazzling technique and emotional depth." Janis has also been recognized for his recordings, with his album of Chopin's complete Nocturnes receiving widespread acclaim and earning him a Grammy Award nomination in 2015. He has also recorded works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Debussy, among others. In addition to his performing and recording career, Janis is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Throughout his career, Janis has remained committed to promoting classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. He has established a foundation to support young pianists and has worked with numerous charities to bring music education to underprivileged communities.
