Genre:ChamberKeyboardRichard Gus Sebring was born on May 22, 1948, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional trombonist and his mother a pianist. Sebring started playing the trombone at the age of 10 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Sebring attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied with renowned trombonist Edward Kleinhammer. After graduating from Juilliard, Sebring joined the New York Philharmonic as their principal trombonist in 1970. He held this position for 38 years, until his retirement in 2008. During his time with the New York Philharmonic, Sebring became known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to blend seamlessly with the orchestra. He was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing with groups such as the New York Brass Quintet and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Sebring's career highlights include performances at the White House for Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, as well as performances at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center. He also performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic on numerous occasions, including a performance of the Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra by Christopher Rouse in 1992. In addition to his performing career, Sebring was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Yale School of Music, among others. Many of his students went on to successful careers as professional musicians. Sebring's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Award, the International Trombone Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, and the New York Philharmonic's Lifetime Achievement Award, among others. Sebring passed away on December 13, 2015, at the age of 67. He is remembered as one of the greatest trombonists of his generation, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.More....
