The Berkshire String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1987 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Berkshire String Quartet were violinists Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, violist Lawrence Dutton, and cellist David Finckel. All four musicians had impressive resumes and had already established themselves as accomplished soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. The quartet's name was inspired by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts, where the group first began rehearsing and performing. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to bring a fresh perspective to classical music. Over the years, the Berkshire String Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals. They have collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians and have recorded numerous albums that have received critical acclaim. One of the highlights of the quartet's career was their performance at the White House in 1992. They were invited to perform for President George H.W. Bush and his guests at a state dinner, where they played a selection of classical pieces that showcased their exceptional talent and musicianship. The Berkshire String Quartet has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout their career. In 1991, they were awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. They were also awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1989, which is given to outstanding young chamber music ensembles. In addition to their impressive performance schedule, the members of the Berkshire String Quartet are also dedicated educators. They have taught master classes and workshops at some of the world's leading music schools and have mentored many young musicians who have gone on to successful careers in classical music. Despite their many accomplishments, the members of the Berkshire String Quartet remain humble and dedicated to their craft.
