Shawn Mativetsky is a renowned tabla player and percussionist in the world of classical music. Born in Montreal, Canada in 1978, Mativetsky was exposed to music at a young age. His father was a music lover and would often play records of Indian classical music in the house. This early exposure to music sparked Mativetsky's interest in percussion instruments, and he began playing the drums at the age of 10. Mativetsky's interest in Indian classical music grew when he was introduced to the tabla, a pair of hand drums used in Indian classical music. He began taking lessons from his first guru, Pandit Sharda Sahai, at the age of 16. Sahai was a renowned tabla player and teacher, and Mativetsky was fortunate to have him as his first teacher. Under Sahai's guidance, Mativetsky learned the basics of tabla playing and developed a strong foundation in the art form. After studying with Sahai for several years, Mativetsky continued his training with other renowned tabla players, including Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. He also studied with other percussionists, including Trichy Sankaran and Glen Velez, to expand his knowledge of percussion instruments. Mativetsky's talent and dedication to his craft soon caught the attention of the music world. He began performing at concerts and festivals across Canada and the United States, showcasing his skills on the tabla. He also collaborated with other musicians, including jazz pianist Matt Herskowitz and Indian classical vocalist Sanjeev Abhyankar. One of Mativetsky's most notable performances was at the 2006 Montreal Jazz Festival, where he performed with Herskowitz. The duo's performance was well-received by the audience and critics alike, and it helped to establish Mativetsky as a rising star in the world of classical music. In addition to his performances, Mativetsky is also a respected teacher and educator. He has taught tabla and percussion at several universities and music schools, including McGill University and the University of Toronto. He has also conducted workshops and masterclasses across North America, sharing his knowledge and passion for Indian classical music with students and audiences. Mativetsky's dedication to his craft has earned him several awards and accolades over the years. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute Fellowship, which allowed him to travel to India to study with some of the country's top tabla players. He was also awarded the Canada Council for the Arts' Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award in 2012, which recognizes outstanding artistic achievement by Canadian artists. Today, Mativetsky continues to perform, teach, and collaborate with other musicians.
