Vilho began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent and promise. In 1933, Vilho enrolled at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied composition with Aarre Merikanto and piano with Selim Palmgren. During World War II, Vilho served in the Finnish army as a musician, playing the piano and conducting military bands. After the war, he worked as a freelance composer and pianist, performing in concerts and composing music for various ensembles and orchestras. Vilho's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and colorful orchestration. He was influenced by the Finnish national romantic style of Sibelius and the neoclassical style of Stravinsky. His works include orchestral music, chamber music, piano music, and vocal music. Another notable work by Vilho is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1952. The symphony is a grand and sweeping work, with lush orchestration and soaring melodies.
