He Zhan-hao was born on December 21, 1933, in Guangzhou, China. He grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist. He began studying the violin at a young age and showed great talent. In 1951, he entered the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the renowned violinist and composer, Lu Siqing. Chen Gang was born on August 27, 1935, in Shanghai, China. He also came from a family of musicians, and his father was a composer. Chen began studying music at a young age and showed great talent in composition. In 1953, he entered the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the famous composer, Ding Shande. He Zhan-hao and Chen Gang met at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where they became close friends and began collaborating on music. They both shared a passion for Chinese folk music and were inspired to incorporate it into their compositions. In 1958, He and Chen composed the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, which is based on a Chinese legend about two lovers who are separated by fate. The concerto is a fusion of Western classical music and Chinese folk music, and it has become one of the most popular pieces of Chinese classical music. The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto was first performed in 1959 by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, with violinist Yu Lina as the soloist. The performance was a huge success, and the concerto quickly became a favorite among Chinese audiences. In 1960, He and Chen graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and began their careers as composers.
