From a young age, Slinckx showed a great interest in music and began studying the piano and violin at the age of six. Slinckx's musical education continued at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied composition with Marcel Quinet and piano with Eduardo del Pueyo. He also studied conducting with René Defossez and orchestration with André Souris. During his time at the conservatory, Slinckx won several prizes for his compositions, including the Prix de Rome in 1956. After completing his studies, Slinckx began his career as a composer, conductor, and teacher. He taught at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels from 1960 to 1996 and was also a professor at the École Normale de Musique de Paris from 1972 to 1982. Slinckx's music is characterized by its modernist style, with influences from serialism and atonality. His compositions often feature complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as unconventional instrumentation. Some of his most notable works include his Piano Concerto (1955), String Quartet No. 1 (1958), and Symphony No. 1 (1962). In addition to his work as a composer, Slinckx was also a respected conductor. He conducted several orchestras throughout his career, including the Belgian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Belgium, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège. Throughout his life, Slinckx received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1981, he was awarded the Prix de la Communauté française de Belgique for his entire body of work. He was also made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1985. Despite his many accomplishments, Slinckx remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life.
