The Hamburg State Music Academy Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Hamburg, Germany. The choir was founded in 1950 by Hans-Joachim Rotzsch, who served as its conductor until 1972. Since then, the choir has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Gerd Albrecht, Ingo Metzmacher, and Kent Nagano. The Hamburg State Music Academy Chorus has a long and illustrious history, having performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues and festivals. The choir has also collaborated with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of the choir's early years was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1954, which was conducted by the legendary conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler. This performance was widely acclaimed and helped to establish the choir's reputation as one of the finest in Germany. Over the years, the Hamburg State Music Academy Chorus has continued to build on this reputation, performing a wide range of choral works from the Renaissance to the present day. In 1974, the Hamburg State Music Academy Chorus was awarded the prestigious Robert Schumann Prize for its outstanding contributions to the performance of choral music. The choir has also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Echo Klassik Award for its recordings. One of the most significant milestones in the choir's history came in 2017, when it celebrated its 67th anniversary with a special concert at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg. The concert featured a program of works by Bach, Brahms, and Mendelssohn, and was conducted by Kent Nagano. Today, the Hamburg State Music Academy Chorus continues to be one of the leading choral ensembles in Germany and around the world.
