He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Hungerford began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent and promise. He studied with several renowned teachers, including Artur Schnabel and Rudolf Serkin. Hungerford's career as a pianist began in the 1940s, when he performed in concerts and recitals throughout the United States. He gained recognition for his technical skill and musical interpretation, and he was soon invited to perform with major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. One of Hungerford's most notable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1950.
