Valdes began playing the piano at a young age and was soon recognized as a prodigious talent. Valdes studied at the Conservatorio Municipal de Música de la Habana and later at the Instituto Superior de Arte. He was heavily influenced by the music of his father, as well as by the jazz and Latin music that he heard on the radio and in clubs. In the early 1960s, Valdes formed his first band, the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, which blended traditional Cuban music with jazz and other modern styles. In 1972, Valdes joined the band Irakere, which became one of the most influential groups in the history of Cuban music. The band's fusion of jazz, rock, and Afro-Cuban rhythms was groundbreaking, and it helped to establish Valdes as a major figure in the world of Latin jazz. Valdes remained with Irakere until 2005, during which time he recorded numerous albums and toured extensively. Valdes has also released several solo albums, including "Solo Piano" (1972), "Lucumi" (1983), and "New Conceptions" (1995). His compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D'Rivera, and Arturo Sandoval.
