After leaving Leipzig, Knechtel worked as a musician in various cities throughout Germany. He held positions as a court musician in Ansbach and Bayreuth, and he also worked as a music teacher. Knechtel's most famous work is his set of six sonatas for harpsichord, which he composed in the 1750s. These sonatas are notable for their intricate counterpoint and their use of chromatic harmonies. In addition to his sonatas, Knechtel composed a variety of other works, including chamber music, vocal music, and orchestral music.
