Artist Info
Anna Dennis is a British soprano who has established herself as one of the most versatile and sought-after classical music artists of her generation. Born in 1979 in the town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England, Dennis showed an early interest in music and began singing in choirs and playing the piano at a young age. Dennis went on to study music at the University of York, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors. She then pursued further vocal training at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with renowned soprano Lillian Watson. During her time at the Academy, Dennis won several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Rose Bowl for outstanding achievement. After completing her studies, Dennis began to establish herself as a professional singer, performing in a wide range of musical genres and styles. She quickly gained a reputation for her clear, pure voice and her ability to convey emotion and nuance in her performances. One of Dennis's early breakthroughs came in 2006, when she was selected to participate in the prestigious BBC New Generation Artists scheme. This program, which selects a small group of young musicians each year, provides them with opportunities to perform on BBC radio and television, as well as at major music festivals and venues around the world. Dennis's participation in the scheme helped to raise her profile and establish her as a rising star in the classical music world. Since then, Dennis has gone on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. She has also appeared in major opera productions at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and the Salzburg Festival. One of Dennis's most notable performances came in 2013, when she sang the role of the Angel in a production of Handel's oratorio "Theodora" at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. The production, which was directed by Peter Sellars and conducted by William Christie, received widespread critical acclaim and was hailed as a triumph for Dennis, who was praised for her "radiant" and "ethereal" singing. Dennis has also been recognized for her recordings, which include a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque era to the present day. In 2015, she won a Gramophone Award for her performance on a recording of Handel's "Jephtha" with the Dunedin Consort, which was praised for its "clarity, precision, and emotional depth." Throughout her career, Dennis has remained committed to exploring new and innovative ways of presenting classical music to audiences. She has collaborated with a wide range of artists and musicians from different genres and backgrounds, and has worked on projects that incorporate elements of theater, dance, and multimedia. In addition to her performing career, Dennis is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at several leading music schools and conservatories, including the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and has worked with young singers through various outreach programs and initiatives.More....
