Marius Brandts Buys was a Dutch composer who lived from 1856 to 1924. He was born in Rotterdam, the son of a wealthy merchant. His family was musically inclined, and Marius began studying music at a young age. He showed great talent as a pianist and composer, and his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music. At the age of 18, Marius went to study music in Leipzig, Germany. He studied piano with Carl Reinecke and composition with Salomon Jadassohn. He also attended lectures by the famous composer and music theorist, Heinrich Bellermann. Marius was a diligent student and made rapid progress in his studies. After completing his studies in Leipzig, Marius returned to the Netherlands and began his career as a composer. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading composers of his generation. His music was characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and colorful orchestration. Marius composed in a variety of genres, including orchestral music, chamber music, and opera. His most famous works include his Symphony No. 1 in C minor, his Piano Concerto in F minor, and his opera, "Die Schneider von Schönau" (The Tailors of Schönau). Marius was also a prolific composer of songs. He wrote over 200 songs, many of which were set to poems by Dutch poets such as Herman Gorter and Frederik van Eeden. His songs were popular with singers and audiences alike, and they helped to establish him as one of the leading composers of his time. In addition to his work as a composer, Marius was also a respected music critic. He wrote for several Dutch newspapers and magazines, and his reviews were known for their insightful analysis and clear writing style. Marius was a deeply religious man, and his faith was an important influence on his music. He composed several works with religious themes, including his oratorio, "Christus Triumfator" (Christ the Victor), and his cantata, "De Opstanding" (The Resurrection). Marius was also a devoted family man. He married his wife, Johanna, in 1883, and they had four children together. He was a loving father and husband, and his family was a great source of inspiration for his music. Marius continued to compose and perform throughout his life, despite suffering from poor health in his later years. He died in 1924, at the age of 68, leaving behind a rich legacy of music that continues to be performed and enjoyed today.
