Born on August 22, 1963, in Leipzig, Germany, Worlitzsch showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He was raised in a family of musicians, and his father was a cellist in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Worlitzsch received his formal music education at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned cellist Siegfried Palm. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, where he received his diploma in cello performance. Worlitzsch's career as a cellist began in 1986 when he joined the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as a solo cellist. He quickly established himself as a talented musician and was soon performing as a soloist with the orchestra. In 1990, he was appointed principal cellist of the orchestra, a position he held until 1996. During his time with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Worlitzsch also began to establish himself as a soloist and chamber musician. He performed with many renowned orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Gewandhaus Quartet. In 1996, Worlitzsch left the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra to pursue a career as a conductor. He studied conducting with Kurt Masur and became his assistant at the New York Philharmonic. He also worked as a guest conductor with many orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Worlitzsch's conducting career took off in 2001 when he was appointed principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Weimar. He held this position until 2006 and led the orchestra in many successful performances and recordings. He also served as principal conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Ulm from 2006 to 2010. In addition to his work as a conductor, Worlitzsch continued to perform as a cellist. He has recorded many albums as a soloist and chamber musician, including recordings of the complete Bach cello suites and the complete Beethoven cello sonatas. Worlitzsch has received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious ECHO Klassik award for his recording of the Dvorak cello concerto. He has also been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Order of Merit of the State of Thuringia.
