David Shamban was born on May 15, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Shamban showed a natural talent for music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Shamban's parents recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking private lessons with renowned cellists and attended the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division. At the age of 16, he was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with renowned cellist Peter Wiley. During his time at Curtis, Shamban won several awards and competitions, including the Philadelphia Orchestra's Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition and the Astral Artists National Auditions. He also performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. After graduating from Curtis, Shamban continued his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he earned a Master of Music degree. He also studied at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, Germany, as a Fulbright Scholar. Shamban's career as a soloist and chamber musician has taken him around the world. He has performed in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has also collaborated with renowned musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. In addition to his performances, Shamban is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. He also gives masterclasses and workshops around the world. Shamban's recordings have received critical acclaim. His debut album, featuring works by Bach and Kodály, was praised by The Strad magazine for its "impeccable technique and musicality." His second album, featuring works by Schumann and Brahms, was described by Gramophone magazine as "a deeply satisfying and insightful interpretation." Throughout his career, Shamban has received numerous awards and honors. He was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2012, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. He was also named a BBC New Generation Artist in 2014, which provides opportunities for young musicians to perform on the BBC's radio and television programs. Despite his success, Shamban remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to push himself to improve and to share his love of music with others.
