Vera's musical education began at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where she studied piano and composition. She later continued her studies in Paris, where she studied with the renowned pianist and composer Nadia Boulanger. During her time in Paris, Vera also studied with the composer Olivier Messiaen, who had a significant influence on her musical style. Vera's career as a classical music artist began in the 1950s when she started performing as a solo pianist.
