Sally Ann Howes is a British actress and singer who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born on July 20, 1930, in London, England, Howes grew up in a family of performers. Her mother, Patricia Malone, was a well-known actress, while her father, Bobby Howes, was a popular musical comedy star. Howes began her career in show business at a young age, making her stage debut at the age of 12 in the musical "The Dubarry." She went on to appear in a number of West End productions, including "The Admirable Crichton," "The King and I," and "Paint Your Wagon." In 1950, Howes made her film debut in the British comedy "The History of Mr. Polly." She went on to appear in a number of films throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including "The Big Money," "The Admirable Crichton," and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." Despite her success in film and theater, Howes remained passionate about classical music. In 1954, she made her debut as an opera singer, performing the role of Adele in Johann Strauss II's "Die Fledermaus" at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She went on to perform in a number of other operas, including "The Merry Widow," "The Mikado," and "The Gondoliers." In addition to her work in opera, Howes also became known for her performances in musical theater. In 1961, she starred in the Broadway production of "Brigadoon," earning critical acclaim for her performance as Fiona MacLaren. She went on to appear in a number of other musicals, including "What Makes Sammy Run?" and "The Sound of Music." Throughout her career, Howes has received a number of awards and honors for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 1963, she was awarded the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in "Brigadoon." She was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 1964 for her recording of "The Sound of Music." She has served as a patron of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the Royal Marsden Hospital, and has been involved with the British Red Cross and the NSPCC.
