Bretislav Novotny was born on May 12, 1985, in Prague, Czech Republic. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Novotny showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Novotny's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his father and quickly developed his skills. By the age of ten, he had already won several local competitions and was invited to perform at prestigious venues across Europe. In 1997, Novotny was accepted into the Prague Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and pedagogue Ivan Klansky. During his time at the conservatory, Novotny honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. After graduating from the conservatory, Novotny continued his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he earned a master's degree in piano performance. He also studied with some of the world's most renowned pianists, including Alfred Brendel, Murray Perahia, and András Schiff. Novotny's talent and dedication to his craft soon caught the attention of the international music community. In 2008, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in San Marino, Italy. This was followed by a series of successful performances at major venues across Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 2010, Novotny made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32. The New York Times praised his "impeccable technique and deep musicality," while The Washington Post called him "a pianist of extraordinary talent and sensitivity." Novotny's success continued to grow, and he soon became one of the most sought-after pianists in the world. He performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to his performances, Novotny was also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He taught at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he inspired a new generation of young musicians. Tragically, Novotny's promising career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. Despite his illness, he continued to perform and inspire others with his music. He passed away on June 15, 2017, at the age of 32. Novotny's legacy lives on through his recordings and the countless musicians he inspired. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, whose talent and dedication to his craft continue to inspire others to this day.
