Jari Villanueva is a renowned classical music composer, conductor, and bugler. He was born on August 2, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Villanueva grew up in a musical family, and his father was a professional trumpet player. He started playing the trumpet at the age of nine and was soon performing in local bands and orchestras. Villanueva attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, where he studied trumpet performance and music education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1975 and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. After completing his education, Villanueva began his career as a music educator, teaching at various schools in Maryland and Virginia. He also played trumpet in several orchestras and bands, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the United States Army Band. In 1980, Villanueva joined the United States Air Force Band as a trumpeter and arranger. He served in the band for 23 years, rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. During his time in the Air Force Band, Villanueva composed and arranged music for the band's various ensembles, including the Concert Band, Ceremonial Brass, and Singing Sergeants. One of Villanueva's most notable compositions is his arrangement of "Taps," the bugle call played at military funerals. Villanueva's arrangement, which he created in 1999, is now the official version of "Taps" used by the United States military. The arrangement has been played at countless military funerals and other solemn occasions, and has become a symbol of honor and respect for fallen service members. In addition to his work with the military, Villanueva has also composed and arranged music for various other ensembles and organizations. He also serves as the Director of Music for the Maryland National Guard, where he oversees the musical activities of the Guard's various ensembles.
