Diego Ares is a Spanish classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and deep understanding of historical keyboard instruments. Born in León, Spain in 1983, Ares began his musical studies at a young age, studying piano with his mother and later with renowned pianist and pedagogue Claudio Martínez Mehner. Ares went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he was mentored by the legendary pianist and teacher Maria João Pires. During his time in Paris, Ares also studied harpsichord with Olivier Baumont and chamber music with Claire Désert and Ami Flammer. Ares' early career was marked by a series of impressive competition wins, including first prize at the 2006 International Harpsichord Competition in Bruges, Belgium, and second prize at the 2007 International Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany. These successes helped to establish Ares as a rising star in the world of classical music. In the years that followed, Ares continued to build his reputation as a soloist and chamber musician, performing at major venues and festivals throughout Europe and beyond. He has collaborated with a number of leading ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Les Talens Lyriques, and the Freiburger Barockorchester. One of Ares' most notable achievements has been his work as a specialist in historical keyboard instruments. He has recorded several albums on period instruments, including a critically acclaimed recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations on a harpsichord built by the 18th-century French maker Pascal Taskin. Ares' deep understanding of the nuances of these instruments has earned him a reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Baroque and Classical keyboard music. In addition to his work as a performer, Ares is also a dedicated teacher and scholar. He has taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, and has given masterclasses at institutions around the world. Ares is also a published author, with articles and essays on musicology and performance practice appearing in a number of academic journals. Throughout his career, Ares has received numerous accolades for his artistry and musicianship. In 2012, he was awarded the prestigious Prix Jeune Soliste des Radios Francophones, which recognizes outstanding young musicians from French-speaking countries. He has also been a recipient of the Fondation Royaumont's residency program, which provides support and resources for emerging artists. Despite his many accomplishments, Ares remains committed to exploring new avenues of musical expression and pushing the boundaries of his art. He continues to perform and record regularly, and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative pianists of his generation.
