New Trombone Collective is a Dutch classical music ensemble that was founded in 2003. The group is made up of eight trombonists who are all graduates of the Conservatories of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. The ensemble has gained international recognition for their innovative and dynamic performances, which showcase the versatility and range of the trombone. The founding members of New Trombone Collective were Jörgen van Rijen, Brandt Attema, Sebastiaan Kemner, Remko de Jager, Bart Claessens, Alexander Verbeek, Ilja Reijngoud, and Koen Kaptijn. These musicians had all studied together at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and had a shared passion for the trombone. They decided to form an ensemble that would showcase the unique qualities of the instrument and explore new possibilities for trombone music. Since its founding, New Trombone Collective has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The ensemble has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and composers, including jazz pianist Chick Corea, composer John Adams, and conductor Valery Gergiev. They have also performed with major orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of New Trombone Collective's career was their performance at the 2006 World Music Days festival in Stuttgart, Germany. The festival is one of the most prestigious events in contemporary classical music, and the ensemble was selected to perform their own composition, "Trombone Concerto." The piece was well-received by both the audience and critics, and it helped to establish New Trombone Collective as a leading force in contemporary classical music. In addition to their performances, New Trombone Collective has also received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2005, they won the prestigious Dutch Classical Talent Award, which recognizes outstanding young classical musicians in the Netherlands. They have also been nominated for the Edison Classical Music Award, one of the most prestigious music awards in the Netherlands. New Trombone Collective's repertoire includes a wide range of music, from classical works by Bach and Mozart to contemporary compositions by living composers. They are known for their innovative arrangements of popular music, such as their rendition of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android." The ensemble is also committed to commissioning new works for the trombone, and they have premiered pieces by composers such as Jacob ter Veldhuis, Theo Loevendie, and David Lang. One of the unique aspects of New Trombone Collective is their commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have developed a program called "Trombone Atelier" that provides intensive training for trombone players of all ages and levels.
