Founded in 1943 by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, the ensemble was created to provide affordable opera performances to the people of New York City. The orchestra and chorus quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and over the years has become one of the most respected and beloved ensembles in the world. The New York City Opera Orchestra & Chorus is made up of some of the most talented musicians and singers in the world. The orchestra is led by a team of world-class conductors, including Julius Rudel, Christopher Keene, and George Manahan. The chorus is made up of over 100 singers, many of whom have gone on to have successful careers in opera and classical music. Over the years, the New York City Opera Orchestra & Chorus has performed some of the most iconic operas and classical music pieces in history. Some of the highlights of their performances include their 1951 production of "The Barber of Seville," which was the first opera to be televised in the United States. They also performed the world premiere of Leonard Bernstein's "A Quiet Place" in 1983, and in 1999 they performed the world premiere of "The Ghosts of Versailles" by John Corigliano. The New York City Opera Orchestra & Chorus has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1956, they were awarded the prestigious Peabody Award for their production of "The Ballad of Baby Doe." They have also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including a nomination for Best Opera Recording in 2004 for their recording of "Madama Butterfly." Despite their many accomplishments, the New York City Opera Orchestra & Chorus has faced its fair share of challenges over the years. In 2013, the company filed for bankruptcy and was forced to cancel its entire season. However, the ensemble has since rebounded and continues to perform to this day. Today, the New York City Opera Orchestra & Chorus remains one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world.
