Born on January 1, 1945, in New York City, Ecklund grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Ecklund began playing the trumpet at the age of ten and quickly developed a passion for music. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he honed his skills and learned from some of the best music teachers in the country. After high school, he went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a degree in classical trumpet performance. Ecklund's career as a professional musician began in the 1960s when he started playing with various jazz bands in New York City.
