Jean-Philippe Viret is a renowned French double bassist and composer, known for his innovative approach to jazz and classical music. Born on December 28, 1960, in Lille, France, Viret grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which gave him a unique perspective on music. Viret began playing the double bass at the age of 14 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. He studied at the Conservatoire National de Région de Lille and later at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he honed his skills as a classical musician.
