Dean's talent and passion for music led him to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He graduated with a degree in trumpet performance and composition in 1978. After completing his studies, Dean began his professional career as a freelance musician, playing with various jazz bands and orchestras. In 1984, Dean formed his own big band, The Syd Lawrence Orchestra, which he led for over 20 years. The band was named after its founder, Syd Lawrence, who was a famous British bandleader in the 1940s and 1950s. The Syd Lawrence Orchestra quickly gained popularity and became one of the most successful big bands in the UK. Under Dean's leadership, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra recorded numerous albums and performed at major venues and festivals around the world. The band's repertoire included classic swing and jazz standards as well as original compositions and arrangements by Dean. Some of the highlights of the band's career include performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. In addition to his work with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Dean has also collaborated with many other musicians and ensembles. He has arranged music for the BBC Big Band, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
