He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. McGuire began playing the violin at the age of six and later learned to play the piano and the clarinet. McGuire studied music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, where he was awarded the prestigious Governor's Recital Prize for Composition. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was awarded the Mendelssohn Scholarship for Composition. McGuire's early works were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s and 1970s, and he was particularly interested in the use of electronic music. His first major work, "Electronics I," was composed in 1969 and featured a tape recording of a clarinet played by McGuire himself. In the 1970s, McGuire began to incorporate traditional Scottish music into his compositions. He was particularly interested in the bagpipes, and his works often featured the instrument in a contemporary context. One of his most famous works from this period is "The Gaelic Flute," which was composed in 1976 and features a solo flute accompanied by a string orchestra. McGuire's music continued to evolve throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He began to incorporate elements of jazz and world music into his compositions, and his works became more complex and experimental. One of his most famous works from this period is "The Venetian Collection," which was composed in 1990 and features a solo violin accompanied by a chamber orchestra. In addition to his work as a composer, McGuire was also a respected conductor and educator. He served as the conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from 1985 to 1992 and was a professor of composition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama from 1994 to 2008. McGuire's compositions have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Scottish Arts Council Award for Composition in 1980 and the Creative Scotland Award in 2009. Some of McGuire's most famous works include "The Gaelic Flute," "The Venetian Collection," "Concerto for Flute and Orchestra," and "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra." His music is known for its innovative use of traditional Scottish music and its incorporation of elements from other musical genres. McGuire passed away on November 28, 2018, at the age of 70. His legacy as a composer, conductor, and educator continues to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.More....
