Micha Afkham is a renowned conductor in the world of classical music. Born in 1983 in Freiburg, Germany, Afkham grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Afkham showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Afkham began his musical education at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, where he studied conducting with Scott Sandmeier. He later continued his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he studied with Leopold Hager. During his time in Vienna, Afkham also had the opportunity to work with renowned conductors such as Bernard Haitink and Sir Simon Rattle. In 2008, Afkham won the prestigious Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, which launched his career as a conductor. He went on to work with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. One of Afkham's most notable performances was his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2010. He conducted a program that included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Ravel, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. The Berliner Zeitung praised his "precise and nuanced conducting," while the Berliner Morgenpost called him a "rising star in the world of classical music." Afkham has also been recognized for his work with the Spanish National Orchestra. In 2014, he was appointed as the orchestra's principal conductor, becoming the first German conductor to hold the position. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in a number of successful performances, including a critically acclaimed production of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde." In addition to his work with orchestras, Afkham is also a sought-after opera conductor. He has conducted productions at the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. One of his most notable productions was a 2016 performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Salzburg Festival, which was praised for its "dramatic intensity" and "musical finesse." Afkham has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, he has also been awarded the German Conductors Prize and the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation Conducting Award. In 2017, he was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. Despite his success, Afkham remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
