Roger Lersy was a French composer born on January 12, 1920, in Paris. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Lersy began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a student of Olivier Messiaen and Darius Milhaud. Lersy's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his teachers, particularly Messiaen. His compositions were characterized by complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and a strong sense of melody. Lersy's music was also heavily influenced by his interest in mathematics and science, which he often incorporated into his compositions. One of Lersy's early works, the Piano Sonata No. 1, was composed in 1942 and premiered the following year. The piece was well-received and helped establish Lersy as a promising young composer. In 1945, Lersy won the Prix de Rome, a prestigious award for young composers, for his composition "Symphonie pour grand orchestre." Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Lersy continued to compose prolifically, producing works for a variety of ensembles and genres. One of his most notable works from this period was the "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1957. The piece was praised for its virtuosic piano writing and its innovative use of orchestration. In the 1970s, Lersy's music began to take on a more experimental character. He began incorporating electronic instruments and tape manipulation into his compositions, creating works that were both avant-garde and deeply expressive. One of his most notable works from this period was "Métamorphoses," a piece for tape and live performers that was premiered in 1972. Lersy continued to compose throughout the 1980s and 1990s, producing works that were both innovative and deeply personal. One of his most notable works from this period was "Les Noces de l'Agneau," a choral work that was premiered in 1985. The piece was inspired by the Book of Revelation and featured complex choral writing and intricate harmonies. Lersy's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Orchestre National de France, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. His works have also been recorded by a number of prominent musicians, including pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and conductor Pierre Boulez. In addition to his work as a composer, Lersy was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Paris Conservatory for many years, where he mentored a number of young composers who went on to achieve great success in their own right. Roger Lersy passed away on December 22, 2002, at the age of 82. He left behind a rich legacy of innovative and deeply expressive music that continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
