Reinaldo Manuel Moya was a classical music composer born on October 23, 1984, in Caracas, Venezuela. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a guitarist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Moya showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Moya's musical education began at the Conservatorio de Música Simón Bolívar in Caracas, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. He later went on to study at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then pursued a Master of Music degree in composition at the Yale School of Music. Throughout his career, Moya composed a wide range of works, including orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. His compositions were often inspired by his Venezuelan heritage, incorporating elements of folk music and rhythms from the region. One of his most notable works is his "Fantasia Venezolana," which was premiered by the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra in 2010. Moya's music has been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. He was also the recipient of several awards and honors, including the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award. In addition to his work as a composer, Moya was also a dedicated educator. He served as a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught composition and music theory. Tragically, Moya's promising career was cut short when he passed away on November 3, 2017, at the age of 33. Despite his untimely death, his music continues to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
