Plate's early works were heavily influenced by the music of the Second Viennese School, particularly the works of Arnold Schoenberg. However, he soon developed his own unique style, which blended elements of serialism, minimalism, and traditional tonality. One of Plate's most significant works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1965. The symphony is a large-scale work that showcases Plate's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create complex, multi-layered textures. The work is divided into four movements, each of which explores a different mood and musical idea. Plate's other notable works include his Piano Concerto, which he composed in 1972. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with intricate passagework and complex rhythms. Plate also composed several chamber works, including a string quartet and a trio for violin, cello, and piano. In addition to his work as a composer, Plate was also a respected conductor. He served as the music director of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 1984 and conducted many of his own works in concert. Plate's music was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and he was awarded numerous prizes and honors throughout his career.
