Manuel Sâo Marcos was a renowned classical music composer who was born on January 15, 1925, in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged their children to pursue music. Sâo Marcos began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He showed great talent and dedication, and by the age of 12, he had already composed his first piece of music. He continued his studies at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, where he studied with some of the most prominent composers of the time. In 1947, Sâo Marcos moved to Paris to further his studies. During his time in Paris, Sâo Marcos also studied with Olivier Messiaen, who had a profound influence on his music. Sâo Marcos returned to Portugal in 1950 and began his career as a composer. His music was characterized by its rich harmonies, complex rhythms, and lyrical melodies. One of Sâo Marcos's most significant works is his opera "O Doido e a Morte" (The Madman and Death), which premiered in 1958.
