Ruth showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. As a child, Ruth's family moved to Los Angeles, where she continued her music education. She attended Hollywood High School and later studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she earned a degree in music. During her time at UCLA, Ruth became interested in opera and began taking voice lessons. After completing her studies, Ruth moved to New York City to pursue a career in opera. She made her debut in 1951 at the New York City Opera in the role of the Third Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Her performance was well-received, and she quickly became a sought-after performer in the opera world. Over the next few years, Ruth performed in numerous productions, including "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "Carmen." She also appeared in several Broadway productions, including "The Threepenny Opera" and "The Beggar's Opera." In 1956, Ruth was cast in the role of Madame Armfeldt in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music." Her performance was widely praised, and she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Ruth continued to perform in opera and musical theater throughout the 1960s and 1970s. She appeared in several productions at the New York City Opera, including "The Barber of Seville" and "The Mikado." She also appeared in several productions at the Metropolitan Opera, including "The Magic Flute" and "Don Giovanni." In 1979, Ruth was cast in the role of Golde in the Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof."
