Donald Kaasch was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Kaasch showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. Kaasch's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of six. Pires quickly recognized Kaasch's potential and took him under her wing, becoming his mentor and guiding him through his musical education. Kaasch's talent continued to flourish under Pires' tutelage, and he began performing in public at the age of eight. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of ten, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. The performance was a huge success, and Kaasch received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing. Over the next few years, Kaasch continued to perform in public, both as a soloist and as part of chamber ensembles. He won several competitions, including the International Piano Competition in Paris and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2003, Kaasch was invited to perform at the White House for President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. He played a selection of classical pieces, including Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Chopin's Nocturne in E-flat major. The performance was a great honor for Kaasch, and he received a standing ovation from the audience. Kaasch's career continued to flourish, and he began performing with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with some of the world's leading conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, and Zubin Mehta. In 2010, Kaasch released his debut album, which featured works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album. Kaasch continued to perform and record throughout the 2010s, releasing several more albums and performing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. He also became a sought-after teacher, giving masterclasses and workshops around the world. In 2019, Kaasch was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize, which recognizes outstanding achievement in classical music. The prize is considered one of the most prestigious awards in classical music, and Kaasch was honored to receive it. Today, Kaasch continues to perform and record, and he remains one of the most respected and admired pianists of his generation. His virtuosic playing and deep musicality have won him fans around the world, and he is considered one of the greatest pianists of his time.
