The Morgan State University Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences for over 80 years. Founded in 1939 by Dr. Nathan Carter, the choir has grown to become one of the most respected and celebrated choirs in the world. The choir's early years were marked by a commitment to excellence and a dedication to showcasing the rich cultural heritage of African Americans. Under Dr. Carter's leadership, the choir quickly gained a reputation for its powerful performances and innovative programming. In 1941, the choir made its first appearance at New York's Carnegie Hall, a milestone that would set the stage for many more historic performances to come. Over the years, the choir has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the White House. The choir has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and composers in the world, including Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and Duke Ellington. One of the choir's most notable performances came in 1963, when they performed at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The choir's stirring rendition of "We Shall Overcome" became an anthem for the civil rights movement and cemented the choir's place in American history. In addition to its many performances, the Morgan State University Choir has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2006, the choir was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government. The choir has also won numerous competitions and festivals, including the International Eisteddfod in Wales and the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. Under the leadership of Dr. Eric Conway, who has served as the choir's director since 1993, the Morgan State University Choir has continued to push the boundaries of classical music and inspire audiences around the world. Dr. Conway has expanded the choir's repertoire to include a wide range of musical styles, from classical to gospel to jazz, and has worked tirelessly to ensure that the choir remains at the forefront of the classical music world.
