Stepan Degtyaryov was a Russian composer who lived from 1889 to 1941. He was born in the city of Kursk, which is located in the southwestern part of Russia. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Degtyaryov showed a great interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Degtyaryov began his formal music education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a talent for the instrument, and by the age of ten, he was already performing in public. In addition to the piano, Degtyaryov also learned to play the violin and the cello. In 1907, Degtyaryov moved to Moscow to study at the Moscow Conservatory. He studied composition with Sergei Taneyev, who was one of the most respected composers of his time. Taneyev was known for his strict teaching methods, and he demanded a high level of discipline and dedication from his students. Degtyaryov thrived under Taneyev's tutelage, and he quickly became one of his star pupils. After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory in 1912, Degtyaryov began his career as a composer. His early works were heavily influenced by the Russian nationalist school of music, which was popular at the time. He wrote several pieces for piano, as well as chamber music and songs. In 1917, the Russian Revolution took place, and the country was plunged into a period of political and social upheaval. Degtyaryov, like many other artists and intellectuals, was deeply affected by these events.
