He was the youngest of three children born to George and Frances Newley. His father was a shipping clerk, and his mother was a seamstress. Newley showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, where he studied acting, singing, and dancing. Newley's career began in the 1950s when he appeared in several West End productions, including "Cranks" and "Stop the World - I Want to Get Off." He also appeared in several films, including "The Small World of Sammy Lee" and "The Strange World of Gurney Slade." In 1960, he wrote the music and lyrics for the musical "Stop the World - I Want to Get Off," which became a huge success and ran for over a year in London's West End. The show was later produced on Broadway and earned Newley a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Newley continued to write and perform music throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
